Ronda Rousey: The Baddest
Watercolor on 11" x 15" watercolor paper
Artwork by Rob Schamberger, painted in 2022
The moment Ronda Rousey's music hit at the 2022 Royal Rumble I knew I was going to do a new painting of her, I just wasn't sure of what approach to take. I was at first going to do an acrylic painting, but I was so enamored with the idea of using a lot of the tools and techniques I've applied to the acrylics back to my watercolors that I got excited to do that instead. Especially using the filbert grainer brush with watercolor has been super fun to experiment with, almost creating hatching with color. It's an awesome texture and overall feel that I'm going to keep experimenting with for a while, I think.
That's a big part of why I enjoy working with a variety of mediums, tools and styles because there's things that I can bring back to other mediums that I wouldn't have otherwise thought of, and thus continuing to grow my core style. I think that works well with a painting of Ronda Rousey as well, someone with backgrounds in judo, MMA, and acting bringing those worlds together in pro wrestling.
