I've had this Roman Reigns painting in mind for several months now, pretty much since the last one of him I did. The idea is originally based off of the 'One Against All' slogan he's used over the years, but then I saw that the 300th episode of Canvas 2 Canvas was coming up and it hit me that this would be perfect.
Why?
The idea, of Roman facing off against overpowering odds, speaks to the 300 Spartans who stood at the Hot Gates against the Persian Empire, recently famously retold in Frank Miller's 300 comics and the movie based on it. How perfect for a painting featured in C2C 300!
So for the composition I wanted Roman to be smaller than the opponents, with them coming at him as a sort of amorphous mass crowding the piece. Lynn Varley, the colorist for 300 used a rich, saturated palette and I kept that in mind, especially for the background. Is that a sunrise or a sunset? The beginning of a chapter or the end of another? I'm leaving that up to you. I can't do ALL the work!
I had high hopes for this when I started it and it really exceeded those expectations. It's a simple composition, yet straight forward and tells the story I want it to. I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I enjoyed making it!
